Fall 2009 Winter 2010 Fashion Trends - Knee Boots & Thigh-high Boots

As summer comes to a close and fall is just around the corner, it is time to start prepping your wardrobes for the fall and winter. But what's in and what's out? Well Fall 2009/Winter 2010 is all about repurposing and calling back. We are here to tell you what's hot and what's not.

As you can see knee boots have become a year around shoe, and the new season will continue this and expound a little. Stripper pumps have already made it into everyday fashion, now thigh high boots have too. Thigh high booths and over the knee boots will no longer be considered taboo fashion for women of the night, the once conservative savvy dresser will take these and mix them with their corporate colored mini-skirts, shorts or tights and walk the streets of New York, Paris or London in broad daylight and will not turn heads for the wrong reasons, but rather pique the interest of those fashionizers that desire to be truly well-dressed.

When adopting this trend, make sure that you follow the rules. These boots may scream 'sexy' but you do not want to. Therefore, make sure you do not purchase the hyper-sexy ones. I am not recommending that you choose a 5 inch stiletto heel, nor am I opting that you for one's with a chunky heel, but you want to make sure that you are sending fashionable signal. So here are the rules:

1. do not wear a patent leather boot
2. do not wear a boot with a chunky heel
3. do not choose a boot with prints on it
4. do choose a matte leather boot or a suede boot
5. do practice walking in your boots

What Styles Should You Opt For?

Classic: for a classic or elegant take on the over-the-knee boot, your best bet is to go for a slim-fitting suede pair with a round or tapered toe. Look no further than Hermes or Isabel Marant for some perfect examples of styles that will stand the test of time.

Rock: the right pair of tight black leather over-the-knee boots screams rock-chic; tough, but sexy. Check out Ohne Titel, Yigal Azrouel, Barbara Bui and Jean Paul Gaultier for some key examples.

Futurism/Cyberpunk: building upon the cyberpunk influences of recent years, some designers have thrown an element of dark futurism into the thigh-high boot mix. Particularly evident in the wound-and-bound effects of boots by Rodarte and Topshop Unique, this is a trend I expect we'll see more of in coming seasons.

Quirky: if none of the above is quite bold enough for you, and you really want to stand out this winter, there have been many other less subtle takes on this trend to hit the runway. Louis Vuitton introduced metallics and top-to-toe laces, while Hussein Chalayan's garter-topped thigh-highs are nothing short of brazen. Do be warned though; if long-term wearability is what you're after then this is probably not the road to go down.

One other thing that you should avoid: wearing thigh-high boots in place of pants, leggings or other form of leg covers as we saw on the Prada 2009/2010 catwalk.

Where To Buy: While stores are still purging themselves of their Spring and Summer fashions , it is still his far out from the 2009/2010 collections actually hitting stores it's hard to guess how many smaller boutiques are already stocking above-the-knee and thigh-high boots. So do what you should always do: seek out that 100% unique vintage pair.

If vintage footwear is not your thing than refer to any of the collections from the aforementioned designers. [Source & Pictures]

Meet Meagan Kurtz of ADMK Jewelry

Adorn Designs by Meagan Kurtz Jewlery is a small but notable 'statement jewelry' design firm. Meagan Kurtz is an Ex-corporate American that now designs and creates unique custom jewelry, using semi-precious gemstones, cultured freshwater pearls, and precious metals.

Recently we had the opportunity to interview Meagan. Her designs are a simple, yet beautiful and are definitely unique. Here's what Megan had to say:

Style: Tell us a little about yourself.

MK: Born and raised in the Northern Virginia area, I moved to Norfolk, Virginia to attend college at Old Dominion University, studied Occupational Technical Studies with an emphasis in Fashion Merchandising. From there, I worked for a small company that offered logistics management to large events. During my 10 years of employment the company grew from 2 employees (I was the 2nd) to 50. With a fast growing company you learn to wear lots of different hats, I however, primarily wore the advertising, graphics and marketing hat. I was able to work on events such as the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, the Republican National Convention in both Philadelphia and New York and numerous NBA All-Star Games just to name a few.

Style: How did you get interested in fashion?

MK: When I was 9 or 10 I used to think how great it would be to design clothes for Madonna and Princess Diana. I used to remember thinking about being their personal buyer and having everyone turn to me for fashion advice. My interest in fashion started there and kept on going through high school where I even took the time to paint my nails each night to match the outfit I was going to wear the following day.

Style: Where do you get your inspiration?

MK: I get my inspiration from the stones themselves. Each stone has its own story, and I am really intrigued by the unique facets or each stone. When you can design a piece where the stone’s color and beauty are the center of the design, the beauty and imagination of the piece shines all by itself.

Style: When you think of fashion, what is the first thing that comes to mind, and why?

MK: The first thing that comes to mind when I think of fashion is “The Runway.” I believe everything new and innovative in fashion first comes from the runway. The Runway tests the boundaries of what people find as normal or comfortable.

Style: Tell us about your jewelry.

MK: A combination of simple and elegant with some sparkle and fun.

Style: Who are some of your clients?

MK: Cambria Cove, The Denim Bar, Kiskadee, Moojoo Ken, The M Store

Style: As a jewelry designer, what is your biggest challenge? Why?

MK: Keeping everything together while continuing to design new jewelry. A jewelry business is not just about putting colorful things on a string and passing it on to someone to look beautiful. From keeping up with next seasons fashions and networking to marketing, selling, advertising and keeping track of inventory, it is difficult to determine what (of the numerous items above) should be put on the top of my daily to do list.

Style: How long have you been designing?

MK: I attended my first jewelry making class in June 2006 and by February of 2007 I sold to my first boutique “all about Jane” in Arlington.

Style: Do you design anything other than jewelry?

MK: Yes, in my previous career I was a graphic designer so I love helping other entrepreneurs design logos, work on color schemes and share ideas about co-ops, marketing or even the stress of running your own business.

Style: What sets your designs apart from those of other jewelry designers?

MK: ADMK’s jewelry consists of unique yet simple designs that sparkle and can be worn in a formal setting or with jeans.

Style: What does “Accessorize” mean to you?

MK: The last thing you put on – but the first thing noticed by others. Accessorizing is a creative way for your personality to shine through.

Style: Who is your style icon and why?

MK: I love the clean yet polished look of Jackie Kennedy Onasis. Of course, I also love how Katie Holmes (Cruz) can wear simple yet elegant outfits to complement her confident personality and demanding schedule.

Style: What are your future goals?

MK: In the next 2 years I would like to find ADMK Jewelry all up and down the East Coast in Boutiques and even department stores. I also hope that in 5 years ADMK may span the globe. Aside from showcasing ADMK Jewelry in stores national and worldwide I want to make sure I am giving back. I have three charities that I am passionate about and have already designed bracelets for each of them where 100% of the proceeds go directly to that charity.

· Special Olympics

· Make a Wish

· Tigerlily

Style: What is your best accomplishment to date?

MK: NYC Couture Fashion Runway.Being a part of the Cambria Cove launch – www.cambriacove.com

Style: Do you design jewelry for men, as well as women?

MK: Just women – for now. I have been asked that before but I my designs have too many sparkles now and I would be afraid the men wouldn’t want the “Bling” or “shocking” accents

Style: What are your price points?

MK:Retail

Earrings: $25 to $55

Bracelet: $40 to $80

Necklace: $60 to $200

Style: How often do you have fashion shows or trunk shows to debut your new pieces?

MK: As often as I can.

Style: What is the name of your latest line?

MK: Candy Store 2010 Collection

Style: Tell us about it.

MK: Lots of fun colors!!

Style: What was the inspiration?

MK: I look at my 2 year old that gets so excited when he gets to go into a candy store at the mall – it is kind of how I feel each time a see a unique, stone – I am like a kid in a candy store.

Style: What materials did you use?

MK: The highest quality semiprecious gemstones, cultured freshwater pearls, cubic zirconium, Swarovski crystals and precious metals. Her latest collection for Spring 2010 focuses on basic beauty and timelessness. Kurtz strives to unite the fresh and unexpected with elegance of natural beauty.

Style: Is there anything else that you would like for us to know?

MK: I think that is it. :)
